Setup guide

Apollo Group TV on Apple TV

Apple TV runs tvOS and has its own App Store, so unlike Roku you can install a player app directly on the box. This guide covers the direct install, plus the AirPlay route if your preferred player is not available on tvOS.

Before you start

  • An Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K. Older models running Apple TV software rather than tvOS cannot install apps.
  • Your Apple ID signed in on the device, so you can install from the App Store.
  • Your Apollo Group TV account details from your confirmation email.
  • A stable internet connection — wired Ethernet if available, since 4K streams are bandwidth-heavy.

Setting up on Apple TV

  1. Open the App Store on the Apple TV. From the tvOS home screen, select the App Store. Use the search field rather than browsing, since player apps are not featured.
  2. Install a compatible player app. Search for an IPTV player app that supports tvOS, or the app named in your welcome email, and install it. Availability on tvOS is narrower than on iOS, so if the app you expect is missing use the AirPlay route below.
  3. Sign in with your account details. Open the app and enter the credentials or activation details from your confirmation email. Typing with the Siri Remote is slow — you can use the Apple TV Remote keyboard in iOS Control Centre, or a paired Bluetooth keyboard, to enter them faster.
  4. Let the channel list download. On first launch the app downloads the full channel and on-demand list. This can take a minute or two and only happens once.
  5. Or use AirPlay instead. If no suitable tvOS app is available, install a player on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, start playback there, then open Control Centre, choose Screen Mirroring and select the Apple TV. Both devices must be on the same network.
  6. Start watching. Browse live channels or the on-demand catalogue from the app. If you used AirPlay, keep the source device awake while it plays.

Keep your details private. Your login works on up to 5 devices. Sharing it beyond your own household can lock you out. Nobody from Apollo Group TV will ever ask for your password by message, or ask for remote access to this device.

Troubleshooting on Apple TV

No suitable player app appears in the tvOS App Store

The tvOS catalogue is smaller than the iOS one and changes over time. Use the AirPlay route from an iPhone, iPad or Mac, or contact support and we will tell you what is currently available for tvOS.

Entering the login details with the remote is painful

When a text field is focused on the Apple TV, an iPhone or iPad on the same Apple ID shows a keyboard notification — use that to type. A paired Bluetooth keyboard also works.

Playback buffers on 4K streams

Connect the Apple TV by Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi where possible. If that is not an option, move it closer to the router or select a lower-quality stream in the player app.

AirPlay stops when the phone locks

Screen mirroring transmits what is on screen, so locking the phone ends it. Increase the auto-lock timeout, or install a player directly on the Apple TV instead.

Apple TV questions

Does Apollo Group TV publish its own Apple TV app?

No. We do not publish a first-party app on tvOS. Playback uses third-party player applications that you install from the App Store, which are not operated by us.

Which Apple TV models work?

Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K, which run tvOS and can install App Store apps. The older Apple TV (3rd generation and earlier) cannot install apps and is not supported.

Is AirPlay as good as installing the app directly?

No. AirPlay depends on your phone or Mac staying awake and sends the video across your network twice, so it is less stable. Install directly on the Apple TV when a suitable player is available.
